We Need To Cut it Out

Have you ever heard the phrase, “it is about to get real?” I feel like Mark 9 should come with that particular warning. The chapter tells us if our hand causes us to sin, cut it off. If our eye causes us to sin, pluck it out.

If we took this advice literally, I’m pretty sure our Church would look like a band of pirates took it over. (Eye patches? Hooks at the ends of our arms? Stay with me people.)

Be a Pawn for the Lord

I mess up. Often. Ask anyone who knows me well. As a result, I sometimes get discouraged in my efforts to be a disciple. I feel unworthy and unable. Yet, there are certain verses of the Bible that give me hope. In the ninth chapter of Mark, the disciples are arguing over who was the greatest.

I can almost hear them now, “I am so much more humble than you!” “You are crazy! No one has been, is, or ever will be as humble as I am!” It seems ridiculous on the surface until we do a good examination of conscience.

Embrace Suffering

St. Peter has many distinctions. He was the rock upon which the Church was built. He was renamed Peter by Jesus. He walked on water - very briefly. He was our first Pope. He is also the only apostle called “Satan” by Jesus. You read that right.

In Mark 8, Peter hears Jesus’ prediction of His own passion. He responds by pulling Jesus aside and rebuking Him. (The common definition of rebuke is to “express sharp disapproval or criticism of (someone) because of their behavior or actions.”

I am someone who pursues justice. I can’t help it. It may have blossomed with my first experience of “the one with the highest-paid lawyer wins,” but I suspect it has always been part of my DNA. Therefore, with the misdeeds of many in our Church leadership coming to light, I want my pound of flesh.

I am not going to go through all the elements of the allegations brought forward by Archbishop Viganò here www.LifeSiteNews.com is an excellent source - suffice it to say, they are very disturbing.

If you believe that they are worth investigating as much as I do, I would encourage you to write to a few people and let him know you are expecting a complete and full investigation from an independent source.
