Seek the Lord

Welcome to the most awe-inspiring, insightful, and absolutely brilliant Catholic column on the planet! Let’s see what this Sunday’s readings are about…

The first reading says, “Seek the Lord, all you humble of the earth…” Hmm. I’ll skip ahead a few lines. “Seek humility; perhaps you may be sheltered on the day of the Lord’s anger.” A few references in there about humility. Okay. Good. A lot of other people need to be more humble.

On with my fantastic column. How about the Psalm response? “The Lord raises up those who were bowed down.” Well, I hope those egotistical people I know get the message!

Maybe there’s a pattern. Let’s check the second reading and the Gospel.

In the second reading: “Whoever boasts, should boast in the Lord.”

And the Gospel? Oh, look! It’s the Beatitudes!

Okay. Well. Obviously, our Faith is reminding those other people who have big egos that they need to be more humble! ...I hope you’ve caught on to what I’m demonstrating here… At various times of my life, I’ve been tempted to hear these calls to holiness and think of other people to whom they must apply.

“I’m glad you’re preaching on this, Father! Everyone else in the pews needs to hear this!”

The irony is so thick you could walk across it!

Here is a reminder: if at any point we find ourselves thinking, “I’m glad you’re preaching on this, Father! Everyone else in the pews needs to hear this!”… we need to immediately stop and pray for humility.

After all, today’s Gospel says, “Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.”
