Miscommunication

It’s funny. I have been a Director of Faith Formation for about six years, and a Coordinator of Youth and Young Adults for 18 years before that—and yet—I tend toward skepticism.

A few years ago, I was on the phone with a woman regarding an upcoming event we were planning for Our Lady of Joy. The signal was unclear and we found ourselves repeating the advertising catchphrase, “Can you hear me now?”

Suddenly, the lady said, “David? This retreat is too important for any miscommunication. Let’s pray.” She proceeded to pray for a clear signal so that we could complete our work for His glory. I’m ashamed to say I clearly recall being tempted to roll my eyes. Doesn’t God have bigger fish to fry than our little conversation?

Now, I don’t know if one of us just moved away from the interference of power lines or what, but the moment she concluded her prayer, the line was crisp and fully clear for the remainder of our conversation.

Months later, the same person arrived in Arizona to lead a parish mission. I was blown away. From the moment she landed at Sky Harbor until the moment she left our great state, she was a servant. She fulfilled her contracted tasks, of course, but she also took time with virtually every staff member, ministering to their needs. She befriended several parishioners. She prayed with several others. Essentially, the only time she wasn’t serving the Lord and His people would’ve been while she slept.

My guess? It is just how she lives her life.

And this is why I’m bringing Gina Bauer back to Our Lady of Joy for two upcoming events. She is the real deal.

I cannot urge ALL OF YOU strongly enough to participate in our parish mission on April 4th and 5th (details at the top left of this page). And if you are a lady (of any age) there is a bonus opportunity: a women’s retreat the Sunday, April 3.

I am honored to have such an amazing Catholic leader come back to our parish and help us grow closer to the Lord. And I truly hope you invite friends and/or family to join you!
