My friends,
This weekend’s readings are so full of astonishing comfort... I hope you didn’t miss it.

First, let’s tackle the First Reading. It is the story of Abraham and Isaac. It is the story of a loving father. It is a story of his only beloved son. A story of the father willing to sacrifice that son. A story of the son willingly carrying the very wood that would lead to his execution up a hill. The son laying upon that wood for the sacrifice. It taking place—quite possibly—in the same precise spot where all these things would take place again 2000 years later.

The entire story of Abraham and Isaac prefigured the story of Jesus dying on the cross for all of humanity. It shows us that our Heavenly Father had a plan from the beginning.

If God had a plan that spanned 2000 years (and actually existed for all of eternity), He certainly has a plan for us. Ephesians 2:10 says it clearly. Say it out loud if you can. Seriously.

“For I am God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works,
which God prepared in advance for me to do.”

Good works. Which God prepared in advance for me to do...

Then, let’s jump to the Gospel where Jesus takes Peter, James, and John and allows them to see Him transfigured. Why them? Well, they ended up being the only apostles who witnessed His agony in the garden.

It is almost as if God knew what they would need in advance.

And if God knows what they needed in advance, He knows what we need in advance.

Like I said: astonishing comfort...
