September 6

This weekend’s readings focus in on human connection. They show us—clearly—that the vast majority of God’s children are called to the added drama and effort of relationships.

I understand in times such as these, must of us are tempted to keep our heads down and keep our thoughts restricted to those who know us best. God truly knows, any opinion on Covid, masks, vacines, whether or not children should go back to school, Trump, Biden...even Mass attendance...can elevate heart rates and endanger friendships.

But this weekend’s readings make it crystal clear: love is willing to have difficult conversation, to endure drama, and to put forth effort. We must challenge one another with love (Mt 18:15-20). We must be open to hearing God’s voice through others without hardening our hearts (Ps 95:1-2, 6-7, 8-9).

There is a pall over our country, our community, our Church, and even many of our homes. We have been beaten down for months without the ability to smile at a stranger, drop by a friend’s house for a dinner party, gather to study our Faith, or give a sign of peace at Mass. It stinks.

We have been trying to keep our spirits up in a world where we all are treated like we might get—or already have— leprosy.

And this moment—right here—is where we have the option of resigning ourselves to be a part of the pall, or rising up and being a light. (I’m no genius, but even small lights seem brighter when surrounded by darkness.)

This is a moment when we are all called to awake with anticipation. What do you have for me to do today, Lord? Who can I reach? Who can I touch? Who can I help to smile?

We can make someone smile through our optimism on social media. We can organize a virtual dinner party (have your dinner ready and be in front of your monitor at 6PM!). We can join one of the Faith Formation classes (after Labor Day, some will remain online, some will be in-person with distancing, and some will be hybrid). And we can send messages of peace to our friends through texts, calls, video conferencing, and the Post Office. Reach out. Be a light in the darkness. It is what we were created to be.
