Discovering What Matters

The national average cost of a 10x10 storage unit is just under $1200/yr. It is the cost of storing all the stuff you can’t even fit in your own home.

$1200 also buys 112 cans of infant formula on Amazon that could be donated to an organization like Maggie’s Place (that supports young women who kept their babies).

There is so much that $1200 could do. Yet, so many of us are afraid that we might need something or we have an emotional attachment to something.

I know there are some very legitimate reasons to rent a storage unit. And beyond that, I can’t tell you how to spend your money or what to do with the things you’ve accumulated. But Jesus can.

In Luke 12, we read the following: “Jesus said, “There was a rich man whose land produced a bountiful harvest. He asked himself, ‘What shall I do, for I do not have space to store my harvest?’ And he said, ‘This is what I shall do: I shall tear down my barns and build larger ones. There I shall store all my grain and other goods and I shall say to myself, “Now as for you, you have so many good things stored up for many years, rest, eat, drink, be merry!”’

But God said to him, ‘You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?’ Thus will it be for all who store up treasure for themselves but are not rich in what matters to God.”

It does not matter to the Lord how many (or few) commas your bank accounts contain. What matters is what you choose to do with the accounts.

When God asks for an account of your stewardship—how you used what you were given—will you be eager to give your report, or will you be searching for justification?

Let’s all reclaim the joy that comes with blessing others for the Lord with every gift He has given us. After all, that is the good life.
